THIMPHU: His Majesty The King of Bhutan granted an audience to the participants of the 18th Golden Youth Award (GYA), an annual flagship program of the Bhutan Youth Development Fund (YDF), in Thimphu on March 17, 2026. The program, held from March 12 to 20 at the Nazhoen Pelri Youth Development Centre, has brought together 80 young achievers from across the country.
The GYA recognizes and celebrates the exemplary contributions of Bhutanese youth in various fields, including social service, entrepreneurship, and community development. By granting a personal audience, His Majesty has demonstrated his deep commitment to empowering and inspiring the next generation of Bhutan’s leaders.
The participants, aged 18 to 25, were selected through a rigorous evaluation process that assessed their achievements, leadership potential, and dedication to the country’s development. The program provides them with opportunities to network, share their experiences, and learn from distinguished mentors and experts.
During the audience, His Majesty engaged with the young participants, inquiring about their projects, aspirations, and the challenges they have overcome. The monarch’s personal interest and encouragement are seen as a significant boost to the awardees’ confidence and motivation to continue their meaningful contributions to Bhutan’s progress.
“It is a great honor to be recognized by His Majesty and to be part of this prestigious program,” said Tshering Yangzom, a 23-year-old social entrepreneur. “This experience has strengthened my resolve to use my skills and passion to make a positive difference in my community and the country.”
The GYA program aligns with Bhutan’s focus on youth empowerment and its commitment to fostering a culture of service, innovation, and civic engagement among the younger generation. As the participants return to their respective communities, they are expected to become catalysts for sustainable development and positive change in the Kingdom.
With the King’s personal endorsement, the GYA is poised to continue inspiring Bhutanese youth to unlock their full potential and contribute to the nation’s prosperity and wellbeing.
