OpenAI has committed to spending more than $20 billion on custom chips from Cerebras Systems, while simultaneously acquiring an equity stake in the chipmaker, according to reporting by The Information on Thursday. Cerebras has developed what it calls Wafer Scale Engine (WSE) technology—essentially an entire AI accelerator printed on a single silicon wafer rather than cut into smaller chips. The company claims its chips can deliver 2-3x better performance per watt compared to traditional GPU-based systems.
