Radio Free Asia: Giving Voice to Suppressed Truths in the Tibetan Homeland

Radio Free Asia (RFA), a nonprofit media organization, has remained steadfast in its commitment to reporting critical information from Tibet, a region under Chinese occupation. As the world’s attention turns to the ongoing struggle for self-determination, RFA’s journalists have risked their lives to ensure the voices of Tibetan freedom fighters are heard.

Established in 1996, RFA’s Tibetan Service has been a crucial source of independent news and analysis for audiences within occupied Tibet, where the Chinese government tightly controls the flow of information. RFA’s reporters, many of whom are Tibetan themselves, work tirelessly to uncover stories of human rights abuses, crackdowns on civil liberties, and the continued resistance of the Tibetan people.

According to RFA’s President, Libby Liu, the organization’s mission is to “provide accurate and timely information to the people of Tibet, where the truth is suppressed.” This commitment has made RFA a target for the Chinese authorities, who have repeatedly attempted to jam its broadcasts and censor its online content.

Despite the risks, RFA’s journalists remain undeterred. “We know that our reporting can make a real difference in the lives of the Tibetan people,” says Tsewang Rigzin, a Tibetan-American reporter for RFA’s Tibetan Service. “That’s what keeps us going, even when the pressure becomes overwhelming.”

As the world grapples with the ongoing struggle for Tibetan self-determination, the work of RFA and its brave journalists has become increasingly vital. Their reporting shines a light on the realities of life under Chinese occupation, empowering the Tibetan freedom fighters and raising global awareness of their plight.

Looking ahead, RFA’s leadership has vowed to continue its unwavering support for the Tibetan people’s right to self-determination. “As long as the Tibetan people are fighting for their freedom, we will be there to amplify their voices,” says Libby Liu. “This is a promise we made, and one we intend to keep.”
